Buttercream or Ganache? Flowers or sparkles?
The inspiration for a birthday cake might come from your passion for Cambridge Utd., your enthusiasm for all things glamour, or your obsession with all things chocolate (I know which category I fit into there…). When it comes to wedding cakes, we tend to be led more by the enthralling trends that grace the internet and bridal magazines. I often find myself scrolling through blogs, scouring Pinterest or perusing Instagram to see which styles are going to be big in the year ahead.
2017 is going to see the continued rise of the naked cake; beautifully adorned with florals, herbs and fruit. If something a little more eclectic is more to your taste, then perhaps a ‘geode’ cake, which takes inspiration from rock and crystal formations, could be the one for you? Or what about edible flowers? Metallics, ruffles, hand painted designs, as well floral and woodland cakes are also likely to be popular choices.
Gone are the days when wedding cakes all had a similar feel and style. It’s wonderful to see the array of designs that couples choose now. The decision, with so much choice, can be tricky though, particularly when there are so many other things to organise. The feel and any theme for your day will help to guide your choice, as well as whether the cake will also be the desert for your meal or served as part of a wider evening spread. Providing your cake designer with lots of detail about your day will really help to ensure your cake is in keeping – any pictures, swatches of fabric, thoughts about flowers and the things that you love the most will all help to create a cake that’s truly unique to you both.
Not forgetting the taste of your cake – lemon drizzle anyone? Or maybe a blackforest gateaux inspiration? Salted caramel? Or maybe an avocado chocolate cake to be at the cutting edge (a seriously good flavour combination – a must try!)? The possibilities are endless, so give it some thought and make sure your wedding cake tastes just as delicious as it looks.
It can feel like a lot of choice, and one task to do in a mountain of others, but your cake designer will be able to help you to see the wood for the trees. And we love a challenge. So if you want to break from tradition and trends, perhaps embracing your childhood (and adulthood!) superheros or love of all things animal, then we would always love to help.
So whatever cake you and your partner decide on for your wedding day, we hope it provides the icing on top of a fabulous day.
